Dear Geer Park Families,
We hope this newsletter finds you and your household well! November is a wonderful month to focus on GRATITUDE: our appreciation and gratefulness for the people, things, and experiences in our lives. The issue of Mental Health has become an area of concern for not only those in the healthcare profession, but those in the education field as well. More and more research has been linking the practice of intentional gratitude with positive, healing effects on the brain. More specifically, those who are suffering from depression, anxiety, stress, or changes in mood/behaviors. Gratitude is a brain exercise and requires practice. These practices include training the brain to see opportunity in every situation, looking for areas to grow and learn, and focusing on what you can control and what you do have. This month, we have engaged students in this practice as well. We started the “Gratitude Challenge” on November 1st. Every day, every student at Geer Park from kindergarten through 5th grade, will write down 1 thing they are grateful for on a sticky note. Students are hanging their sticky notes in the hallways. The goal is to create a “wave of gratitude” that is connected from class to class and spans across the entire school. Please ask your children about this challenge, encourage them to look for simple, everyday things to be grateful for, ask them why they are grateful, they will surprise you! As we look forward to Parent Teacher Conferences in the coming weeks, we want to take an opportunity to reflect on our gratitude for the families at Geer Park. We are grateful for your support, your efforts to be involved and engaged in your child’s schooling, and your commitment to continuing to build a thriving school community. Our Halloween celebration was a testament of this village coming together to celebrate our students and being together. Thank you for all you do. I look forward to seeing more and more families at Geer Park for our Parent Education Meetings, special events, and being involved in the PTA. A special thank you to our PTA board for their work this year in supporting me as a new Principal and for filling in big shoes that Mrs. Jones’ left behind. You are doing an amazing job and we look forward to working with you hand in hand to support our Geer Park Stars!
Grade Level News
KDG: The kindergarten classes continue to work hard. We have established our classroom routines and the students are becoming very independent learners. Each student now has a reading bag that they should be bringing home each day. Please be sure to read the books with your child every day. Every student should be reading at least 10-15 minutes each day. Included in the reading bag are word cards. Please also practice reading the word cards. This will directly help your child in their reading and writing skills. In Math, we continue to work with numbers. All students should be able to recognize and write the numbers 1-10. Students should be practicing counting from 1-100. We will soon begin a new unit on Geometry and learn about shapes. In Social Studies, we will soon be learning about needs and wants. Needs are things we need to survive and wants are things that we’d like to have but are not necessary to survive. Our Kindergarten Team all use Dojo to communicate classroom news and school news. Please be sure to check notifications from Dojo daily.
First: First grade is really on the move. We have established routines in the classroom and the school. The first graders are leading the way in their learning. First grade is almost finished with Module 1 in math. They are showing so much growth and success in Algebraic Thinking and Operations. This is a huge accomplishment because Module 1 is long and packed with information. We will be taking our End of Module Assessment in a week or so. We are almost finished with Unit 2 in our Benchmark ELA series. We are learning about characters. We are also learning about Author’s Purpose. That means the author wrote the story to either entertain us, persuade us, or inform us. Our Benchmark series also has cross-curricular learning embedded from unit to unit. Unit 1 was our springboard to life science. Unit 3 will review Social Studies and how we get along with each other. In Science, we are finishing up life science. We are learning about what animals need to survive, how animals learn from their parents, and how animals look similar to their parents. In Social Studies, we will learn about families and their histories including family trees. (This will mesh nicely with our fall food drive for the less fortunate. Please consider donating. Thank you.) As you can see, first grade is packed with learning. We started slowly to establish routines. Now we are moving right along. We thank all of the families for their support at home. By working together, we can accomplish great things.
Second: Second grade teachers have an attitude of gratitude! Thank you parents for all of the continued support that you provide our students and school. We are grateful and appreciative of you! During the month of November, our language arts focus is on stories of various genres which include but are not limited to fables, fairy tales, and realistic fiction. We are learning to recognize the basic elements of a story (setting, characters, plot, conflict and theme) and how story elements help readers understand the structure and meaning of a story. Measurement is our math focus. Activities are designed to deepen students’ understanding of measurement using various tools and length units, as well as, the ability to relate addition and subtraction to length. In social studies, we are focusing on geography. We will explore a variety of maps and how urban, suburban and rural communities are connected through transportation. In Amplify science, students read about and reflect on their own similarities to a real-life engineer who designs mixtures. Students are also introduced to the engineering design process cycle and reflect on their experiences with this process as it relates to their own glue making. This is intended to strengthen students’ understanding of engineering practices as they prepare to move into the next phase of the design cycle and to set their work in the context of what professional engineers do. PhD Science will provide students with opportunities to observe a variety of objects and materials and to describe and classify those materials by their properties with emphasis on the States of Matter. Our investigations and observations will deepen the understanding of our essential question: Why different kinds of birds use certain materials to build their nests? Upcoming Events: An in-school field trip is scheduled for November 9th. The creators of High Touch High Tech Science Made Fun!, will visit our classrooms to share some STEM fun. We are excited to enhance our current science curriculum with Chemfun!
Third: We have been busy in third grade! In math we are finishing our unit on multiplication and division story problems. We will soon be moving on to working on elapsed time. In language arts we are beginning unit two which is fiction. We will be focusing on the characters’ actions in the stories that we read and how those actions shape events in the story. Students also are continuing to work on writing paragraphs. They know the parts of a paragraph: an interesting lead, topic sentence, details, and a conclusion sentence. In science we are learning about how animals changed over time. Students are learning about how scientists look at fossils to get clues about animals in the past. We are continuing to learn about Michigan’s human and natural characteristics in social studies. In late October, a firefighter talked to the third graders about fire safety and what they should do if there is a fire at home. This month third graders will be taking a trip to the fire safety house to apply what they learned!
Fourth: This month in 4th grade students are focusing on what they are thankful for in their lives. Everyday students are thinking of one thing they are thankful for and writing it on a post it note to be posted along the hallway outside of our classroom. In math we are working hard to improve our addition and subtraction skills with larger digit numbers including solving story problems involving addition and subtraction. Students are also starting a literature unit that focuses on fiction text. All 4th graders will be working on inferencing, describing characters, making connections, summarizing, and theme during reading instruction. Students will also be writing opinion essays this month and we will continue to focus on developing better sentence fluency and conventions while students are writing their essays. Finally, in social studies we are continuing to study the questions that geographers ask and in science our new unit is focused on earth science and the study of rocks and how they are formed. As we continue through November, all students should be working on improving their basic fact fluency in addition, subtraction, and multiplication. 4th graders will also be involved in celebrating the core value of respect this month. The core value assembly at the end of the month will feature 4th graders from each of the three 4th grade classrooms as they share either a skit, poem, or song with the whole school that shows good examples of respect. Keep up the good work 4th grade!
Fifth: This month in 5th grade, we are learning how to create a Procedural Writing piece about one of our favorite family recipes. Many already know about this project as interview sheets have gone home in the past week. In math, we are expanding our knowledge of decimals by using additions, subtraction, multiplication, and division with them. In Social Studies we are wrapping up our study of the U.S. Constitution in Nov. We have changed our focus from informational texts to literature. Honing in on character traits that are favorable to a society.
Sickness/Illness
If you have been following the news, you know that cases of RSV, Pneumonia, Influenza, and COVID are on the rise amongst school age children. If your child is showing signs of illness: runny nose, coughing, fever, vomiting, sore throat, diarrhea, rash, please KEEP THEM AT HOME until they have been seen by a doctor or are symptom free/non contagious. If you are sending your child to school and they are recovering, it may be a good idea to have them wear a mask to allow them to recover fully and avoid getting others sick. Lastly, please be sure you call the office if your child will be absent. (313) 827-2300.
Lost & Found
If your child is missing an item: sweater, jacket, gloves, lunchbox, etc, please encourage them to check the lost and found by the recess door. If you are concerned about an item your child lost, feel free to check in with the office and make your way down to the recess door in front of the gym to check the lost and found for your child’s missing item. Once a month on Parent Education Meeting days, we will place all the items on tables for parents to browse. Whatever remains after that day gets donated. We have donated many new, name brand items that students are missing!
Late Arrivals and Early Dismissal
We have noticed an increase in both late arrivals in the morning and early dismissals (signing students out) that we need to address. I am going to please imagine the role of your child’s teacher: she is responsible for bringing 22 students safely inside, having them all hang up their things, put their materials in the right place, start their morning work, take attendance, ask 22 students individually if they want first choice or second choice for lunch, check their planner and homework, and most importantly, teach! Instruction starts at 9am. Imagine doing all of this and then having a student come in at 9:05am, stopping and making sure that student does what they need to do. Starting again, then stopping at 9:10am for another late student to make sure they do what they need to do. Starting again, then stopping at 9:20 for another late student. It is a major disruption and we need your help in ensuring that all students are in their lines by 8:55am. We will begin making phone calls home next week to support our families who have students who are arriving late everyday.
Additionally, if you need to sign your children out early, you need to call the office first. We need time to call the teacher, prepare the student’s things, and bring them down. We will not be signing any students out after 3pm if parents have not already called the office before! It is a safety hazard too close to the end of the day.
Parent Education/PTA Meetings
Our last Parent Education Meeting focused on Screen Time and the Effects on the Brain and Child Development. We had over 70 parents attend our meetings, gave away over $75 dollars in gift cards, as well as brand new books and free popcorn for students! We did hold an AM and a PM meeting to offer working families some options. We will continue this practice and hope to continue to see an increase in attendance. Our next meeting will focus on Online Safety and Bullying and again bring in Ms. Samah Saidi, a Speech Pathologist and expert on the topic. We hope you will join us on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022 at 9:30am OR 5:30pm.
Student of the Month: RESPECT
Congratulations to our October Students of the Month! These 18 amazing Geer Park Stars were chosen as model students who demonstrated INTEGRITY in everything they do. Our focus this month will be RESPECT. Students will be recognized at our next Core Value Assembly on November 18th, 2022. Students of the Month will be selected by their teacher at the end of the month, have their picture taken for our showcase, and receive a certificate and prize! Parents of Students of the Month will be invited to come to our monthly assembly honoring our students! You can support and encourage your children by modeling the Core Values, talking to them about what they mean, and teaching them how to make positive choices for themselves.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Please be sure to check with your child’s teacher about an appointment for Fall Parent Teacher Conferences. They are scheduled for November 7th, 10th, and 16th. Each conference should last about 15 minutes and give parents/guardians and teachers an opportunity to discuss academic progress, social emotional needs, and how to support at home. Spring 2022 MSTEP and WIDA scores will also be sent home. We encourage you to bring your child with you to Parent Teacher Conferences, it is a great opportunity for your child to SEE the relationship between school and home and build the understanding that we are one team supporting them.
Mathathon and Spelling Bee
We will be holding two fun, friendly competitions to promote the acquisition and learning of math and spelling foundational skills. First, our Mathathon will be held 3 times per year. We just held our first one in October and the students were very excited! Students in 1st-5th grade were given timed math tests of 50 questions each to complete. Students who were able to finish the fastest or with high accuracy were recognized. Please encourage your children to practice at home! There are many online websites and apps that can support basic math fluency in addition/subtraction and multiplication. We will also be holding Classroom Spelling Bees the week of November 28th to prepare students for the Schoolwide and District Spelling Bees later in the year. Spelling bee lists were shared with all students. If you would like a copy for your child to practice, please let us know. We would be more than happy to print them in the office for you!
Chuck E. Cheese Fundraiser
Our PTA has organized a special Geer Park event at Chuck E. Cheese on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn on Friday, November 11th, 2022 from 4pm-9pm! This after-school fundraiser is a great opportunity for families to get to know one another and students to build community outside of the classroom in a fun and exciting way. Students will receive a special visit from Chuck E. Cheese himself on Friday, November 11th when he visits classrooms to promote this event. Chuck E. Cheese will donate a percentage of all funds collected back to our PTA to use for our students. We hope all of our families are able to spend some quality time with one another at this event!

Black Tie Pasta Dinner
PTA will be hosting a “Black Tie Pasta Dinner” on Thursday, November 17th, 2022 at 5:30pm. The event will be held in the cafeteria and will be an opportunity for our students to “Dress Up” and enjoy a special evening with their families. Tickets are $10 per person and include a delicious pasta dinner, salad, breadsticks, and dessert! We only have 50 tickets to sell for this special evening and usually sell out quickly! You may purchase tickets for you and your child(ren) before or after school in the Main Office.

الصف الخامس: هذا الشهر في الصف الخامس ، نتعلم كيفية إنشاء جزء كتابة إجرائي حول إحدى وصفات الأسرة المفضلة لدينا. يعرف الكثير بالفعل عن هذا المشروع حيث عادت أوراق المقابلات إلى المنزل في الأسبوع الماضي. في الرياضيات ، نقوم بتوسيع معرفتنا بالأرقام العشرية باستخدام عمليات الجمع والطرح والضرب والقسمة معهم. في الدراسات الاجتماعية ، ننهي دراستنا لدستور الولايات المتحدة في نوفمبر. لقد غيرنا تركيزنا من النصوص الإعلامية إلى الأدب. شحذ سمات الشخصية التي تناسب المجتمع.
المرض

مؤتمرات الآباء والمعلمين

عشاء باستا بلاك تاي
